AutoDesk FlexNet feature codes, March 2012

FlexNet (FlexLM) uses a predefined set of codes in order to manage multiple licensed Features. Each of these features is given a unique code, by which FlexNet grants license requests, and keeps track of the license pool.

OpenLM Also makes use of these feature codes during FlexLM reporting in order to monitor and optimize Autodesk license usage. As versions progress and features are added, the code tables need constant updating. The following is a complete list of AutoDesk codes, updated to March 2012. It was taken from Autodesk’s official site.

Guide to update Autodesk Network License Manager IPv6 for 64-bit Windows OS

Requirements: There are certain pre-requisites or requirements which must be fulfilled before upgrading the Autodesk Network License Manager to IPv6 version support.

  • You must have Autodesk Network License Manger already installed on your server before applying IPv6 support update.
  • So, make it sure that installed software is working good otherwise install a new one by referring Network Licensing Guide which is available in Help System.
  • The server must be stopped before carrying out software update or any other administratively critical maintenance activity on Network License Manger server; server should be restarted after the successful completion of activity.
  • You must be logged into the system with administrator rights for stopping, updating and restarting the services on the server.

Limitations: Though this update is very excellent tool but it has following limitations which should be considered while deciding or working with Autodesk Network License Manger.

  • It supports the operating system with 64-bit configuration; supported Operating systems are Microsoft® Windows® Server 2008 and 2008 R2 64-bit, Windows Vista® 64-bit and Windows7 64-bit.
  • This supports either a mixed environment of IPv4/IPv6 or IPv6-only.
  • This implementation does not support IPv4 –only environment.

Updating procedure: You must make it sure that all the requirements are fulfilled for upgrade activity. Now follow the step by step task given below for updating the Autodesk Network License Manger for IPv6 support.

  • Download NLM_IPv6Support_Win64.exe file and save on the desk top of the server.
  • One the desktop of the server, right click on LMTOOLS.exe and choose Run as Administrator; the LMTOOLS program will start.
  • On LMTOOLS select ‘start/stop/reread’ tab and choose stop server and wait for 15 seconds, then close the LMTOOLS program. Your server has stopped now.
  • The default location of Autodesk Network License Manager is C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager; you have to locate lmtools.exe, lmutil.exe, lmgrd.exe, and adskflex.exe files to take the backup of Autodesk Network License Manager Files.
  • After taking the backup of above mentioned files, double click the downloaded file NLM_IPv6Support_Win64.exe placed on the desktop of the server.
  • The NLM_IPv6Support_Win64.exe file will be extracted automatically on ‘C:\install\Autodesk\NLMIPv6Support_Win64’ location; extracted updated files are lmtools.exe, lmtools.exe, lmutil.exe, lmgrd.exe, and adskflex.exe.
  • Copy all above mentioned updated files and paste them into existing Autodesk Network License Manager Folder whose default location is C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\.
  • System will prompt for replacing the existing file; click yes to confirm.
  • Right click again on LMTOOLS.exe available at desktop and choose run as Administrator.
  • On LMTOOLS program click Start/Stop/Reread tab and choose start server tab; this will restart your server with updated support to IPv6 on 64-bit windows operating systems.
  • Close the LMTOOLS program and you are done now.

Problem/Error with AutoCAD network license management: “A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager”

Details:

You can face above problem frequently on AutoCAD 2007 based products when you are working in an organization where:

  • Concurrent licensing scheme is implemented through server/client networking mode.
  • Network bandwidth is low.
  • Network latency is high or connected through VPN.

All of the products based on AutoCAD 2007 contain licensing enhancements which tend to increase network latency and bandwidth utilization of the network. Therefore, you can face this problem while trying to claim the license of the program from the License Manager Server. Earlier versions of AutoCAD products i.e. older than 2007 release were not observing this problem. In this problem, first you are presented with a FLEXlm license finder dialogue box during license obtaining process followed by a message stating:

“A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager.

Error [1.5. -15]”

In some other products you can receive a bit different message as given below:

“A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager.

Error [1.5. -18]”

Reasons for Error:

A network throughput or data rate of the link is the main reason for this error especially in case of heavy applications like AutoCAD 2007. Reasons can be summarized as below:

  • Low Bandwidth of the connection i.e. Dial-up connection or low speed ISDN/DSL connection.
  • High Network Latency i.e. VPN
  • Response waiting time of the application/program

One or more of the above reasons can be the root cause of this problem. This problem has recommended solutions which given below.

Solutions:

  • Recommended solution for this problem is either increase in the bandwidth of the connection or decrease in the network latency or enhancement in both parameters.
  • By modification of the response waiting time counter/value which is used as the last resort for the solution of this problem. This is a stepwise procedure to modify the response waiting time counter. Here is the stepwise procedure for the same:
  1. Right click My Computer and choose properties.
  2. On system property dialogue box choose advanced tab.
  3. Click on the environment Variables
  4. On environment variable dialogue box choose system variables field and hit the new button
  5. A new system variable dialogue box with two fields appears; put “FLEXLM_TIMEOUT” in variable name and put 1000000 in variable value field.
  6. Click OK on all three dialogue boxes to close them
  7. Launch the AutoCAD application

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If the problem persists, increase the variable value in multiples of 1000000 micro seconds and reach to the value which gives you satisfactory communication results.

Autocad for MAC!!!

Autodesk announce the release of Autocad 2011 for MAC. It runs natively on the OS X platform with a MAC style interface.

Check the announcement at Autodesk site.

This version does not yet supports network licensing (floating/concurrent licensing) such as the Windows version that uses FLEXlm (FLEXnet) floating licensing.

Another important point to consider is that this initial version of Autocad for MAC does not yet includes all the functionality included in the Windows version. I assume that will be solved very soon.

Is it another crack in the Microsoft dominance in the organizational market?
